Gypsy

Turkish Roman (Gypsy)

Turkish Roman (Gypsy) Dance – this dance of the Turkish Roma people is improvisational and danced in the community at weddings or other gatherings. The 9/8 rhythm in all of the variations is a favorite of Turkish Roma. Characteristics of the dance are gestures which often reflect their daily life, such as playing a musical instrument

Spanish Calé Zambra Rumba

Spanish Romani / Calé

Zambra & Rumba Flamenca

Zambra (THAM-brah) is a Flamenco Woman’s dance born in the caves of the Albaicin, the living quarters of the RomaCalé (Gypsies) of Granada. These dances are one of the favorite showpieces in their performances for tourists. A compas of 4/4 and played at a variety of tempos it is beautiful to dance to.

Rumba Flamenca -a solo dance that is light hearted (chico) and fun. The rhythmic cycle (compas) is in four or eight count phrases, the Rumba rhythm was adopted by the Romani (Gypsies) after it arrived from Cuba in the early 20th century as Rumba Flamenca. It is thought that Flamenco itself might have originally influenced Cuban Rumba. It is an example of acculturation of the music and dance of two different cultures, making a hybrid that is thoroughly entertaining.

June Seaney Performing Russian Dance Style

Russian Romani (Gypsy) Dance

Intricate footwork originally defined this dance as it was danced to the beautiful Russian Roma music. Later dancers added skirt movements using very full skirts as well as dancing with shawls. Russian Roma Music is characterized by the seven string guitar and it has some similarity to Flamenco guitar music.

Creating Choreographies

Creating Choreographies

Oriental (Belly Dance) & Romani (Gypsy) Dance

Part Lecture – Part Creating – Oriental Dance or Belly Dance and Romani (Gypsy) dances are improvisational dances, but having said that, there are several reasons to choreograph our dance. We get nervous on stage and might forget moves and choreography might help to remind us what to do next, we might want to be more organized with our dance to give it that polished look, or we are dancing with another person or a troupe and we need to be dancing as a unit, or you are a dance teacher, and this will help your students learn how to put moves together.
